from Pastor Bieber
Dear Christian friends: Easter triumph, Easter joy, Easter victory. We hear it proclaimed, we sing it, we pray it. Do we experience it? Does our participation in the paschal mystery change our lives? Whenever we return to the font, we are called to experience ourselves as newborns again, as it were. Our Baptism into Christ's death opens the way to a new life. Children live a new life by default. They are not jaded as we are. They have not tried God's patience with endless promises of repentance as we have. Unless we be as they are when we come to the gate of the kingdom of heaven, we have been assured that we shall not enter therein. So next Sunday, listen to Rachel's clear, high voice intone the Lord’s Prayer. Watch Isaac worship with gesture. Attend as Thomas argues with his mother about whether the correct response at this point in the Liturgy is "Hear our prayer" or "Amen." Walk with them as we follow Jesus together. What we do and say in this place is strange to the world. In this place, all the baptized walk the kingdom path together; some are carried on it. In our common worship, these children teach us again the "performative utterances" that mark our participation in the mystery of faith and so in the community of the faithful. These are the words and gestures of an Easter people, and that people we are. Grace and peace, Paul Bieber+, STS, Pastor |
